Powers of Ten

View the Milky Way at 10 million light years from the Earth. Then move through space towards the Earth in successive orders of magnitude until you reach a tall oak tree just outside the buildings of the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory in Tallahassee, Florida. After that, begin to move from the actual size of a leaf into a microscopic world that reveals leaf cell walls, the cell nucleus, chromatin, DNA and finally, into the subatomic universe of electrons and protons.

Today's children may be whiz kids on computers but many know little about the origins of the food they eat and the clothes they wear. Now, thanks to the Tellus mission, children can use their computer skills to learn about agriculture. To help schoolteachers use the site a Tellus information pack is available. This area includes the Channel Islands National Park, the waters of the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary and the densely populated California coastline, and will serve as our "laboratory" for studying nature's dynamic systems during the 2002-2003 school year.
