| iLinc Recording Tips
Recording your sessions is great way to make content available anytime. Make sure you are ready to successfully record your sessions by following these simple tips.
Getting Set Up
Download the iLinc Recorder: Go to your iLinc Communications Center. Select Help, Downloads, Download iLinc Recorder. Open the downloaded file to begin installation. The iLinc Recorder will now be available for use in your next session under Tools, Record Session.
Record Audio and Web: If you are using Voice over the Internet, you will not need any additional equipment to record both Web and audio. Simply select Tools, Record Session to begin recording. However, if you are using phone for the audio portion of your session, you can purchase a third-party device to send your phone audio into your computer. You can purchase this device from any company.
Recording a Live Session
Start the Recording: To start recording a session, go to the Tools menu of your iLinc Tool Panel. Select Tools, Record Session. A dialog box will appear giving you the option to start the recording. After selecting Start, the dialog box will minimize. To pause the recording, maximize this dialog box. The recording is automatically paused. To continue the recording, select Resume. To end the recording, select Stop.
Making a Clean Recording: Remember that the iLinc recorder captures all movements on the screen of the person recording the session. Make sure you turn off external applications that might pop up on screen (such as any instant messaging application and Microsoft Outlook). Also, be aware of your iLinc text chat. If a leader is recording the session, all interactivity on their screen is captured (such as, private text chat). If private chat is critical to the session, consider having an assistant or participant record the session from their view (vs. the leader’s view).
Saving the Recording: To end the recording, maximize the recording dialog box and select Stop. You will be prompted to save the recording to your local computer. After saving the file you’ll be prompted to upload the recording to your iLinc Web site. If you choose to do this, the recording will be available as a Material Item at your iLinc Communications Center. iLinc recordings are saved as a .LRC file and can be played back using the iLinc Player.
Editing Recordings
Using the iLinc Recording Editor: The Recording Editor is available as part of your iLinc Recorder Download. To open the Editor, go to Start à Programs à iLinc à RecordingEditor. Before you begin editing always make a backup copy of your original recording. With the editor, you can cut, crop, and copy any portion of the recording. You can also Index the recording allowing viewers to jump to specific index marks (similar to a table of contents).
Recording Editor Advanced Options: You can also import and export audio from the recording. In order to use this option, make sure the session is set up as Voice over the Internet. This will allow you import audio if you chose to re-record the audio portion.
Posting Recordings
Posting at the Communications Center: You have several options for posting your completed iLinc recording. If you choose to upload the file to your Communications Center, it is then available as a Material Item associate with that meeting, class, conference, or support room. Users can log into the Communications Center to view or you can make the material item available on your Public Events page (new feature in 7.5). This allows viewers to go to a public URL to view the recording. When distributing the recording with this method, the iLinc Player will automatically load when a viewer clicks on the link. The recording will then begin playing.
Sending a Link: You can send users a link to your Public Events page (as described above). Additionally, if you are using LearnLinc, you can add the recording as an activity by going to your Communications Center home page, under LearnLinc, Add New Activity, change Activity Type to iLinc Recording. Title the recording, browse to the file, and submit. After the recording is added, you will notice a Send Invite link on the homepage of your Communication Center next to the recording title. Click on this link to email the recording link. Note that anyone viewing your recording using this method will be tracked. You can then run a report to determine who viewed the recording and for how long. When distributing the recording with this method, the iLinc Player will automatically load when a view clicks on the link. The recording will then begin playing.
Sending the Recording File: You can also send the recording file itself or post this on your own Internet or Intranet Web sites. Remember that the recording is in a proprietary format. If the recording is hosted outside of the Communication Center, the player does not automatically load. So, viewers will need to download the iLinc Player if they have never attended a live iLinc session. After downloading the iLinc Player, viewers can simply click on the file to begin playing.
Recording and archiving iLinc sessions can be extremely valuable, as this process extends the impact of your sessions through their availability long after the session actually takes place. Whether it’s an important presentation, training classes, or a conference you want to share with others who could not participate live, recording maximizes your investment in Web conferencing.
