A Recipe for Whipping Up Online Facilitation Par Excellence:A well-written article that captures some of the problems associated with onlin e facilitation. The authors offer practical advice on creating and maintaining momentum and motivation for online learners. Written by Linda Waddell and Sue Byrne, published in the November 2003 issue of Sidebars.

Online Facilitation - From Workplace to Workspace: This article is an excerpt from a larger publication titled "Workplace to Workspace". The authors provide practical guidance on how one can be an effective online facilitator. Topics include: defining facilitation, mailing list communication and collaboration, facilitation roles and responsibilities, and maintaining your virtual community (such as those on your mailing list). Those who are managing information sharing will benefit from reading this article.

Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 : The World Wide Web Consortium provides these guidelines on website accessibility. The primary goal of the guidelines is to promote accessibility for people with disabilities. However, following them will also make Web content more available to all users. The 14 specific guidelines can be used as indicators for monitoring websites. An appendix describes validation tools.

Information Quality WWW Virtual Library: This website is self-described as "The Internet Guide to Construction of Quality Online Resources". The VL is the oldest catalog of the web, run by a loose confederation of volunteers who compile pages of key links for particular areas in which they are expert. This webpage links to eleven subdirectories, including: "Evaluation of Information Resources," "User Interface Design Issues," "Web Development Quality," and "Internet Studies." Each of these subdirectories in turn includes links to scores of online references, usually well selected by the volunteer editors.

Great Idea, but how do I do it? A practical example of learning object creation using SGML/XML: Janet Bartz's paper provides excellent analogies to assist the reader in understanding learning objects. Though it is a technical paper, someone who is not technically oriented can grasp the concepts presented. Abstract: The educational community is interested in learning objects, what they are, how they are used, and the many benefits derived from their use. Most educators are familiar with the value of learning objects in theory, but on the practical side are wondering what is involved in creating them.

Marc Prensky: Digital Game-Based Learning: Consultant and author Marc Prensky has posted articles and book excerpts on his web site related to the potential role of electronic gaming on e-learning activities divided into two main themes: students, games and learning; and military. Included are chapters from his book "Digital Game-Based Learning". Click on the "writing" link for on-line access to the book excerpts and articles. This is a good resource for those wishing to explore what electronic gaming may teach us about successful e-learning strategies

Learning Objects - A primer for neophytes: This brief article informs the reader about what learning objects are and why they are being talked about. The author also provides some links to resources on LOs. Written by Glen Millar for Sidebars, November 2003, Vancouver B.C

A Revolution in Knowledge Sharing: E-Knowledge and using knowledge assets. This well-written paper challenges educators to begin "reflecting about the nature of knowledge and how knowledge can be understood and shared". When is a Learning Object not an Object: A first step towards a theory of learning objects - This paper examined various institutional definitions of learning objects and the link between learning objects and Object Oriented Programming theory. The authors "conclude the article with a short working definition and suggestions as to where future work is needed in the fleshing out of our understanding of learning objects."
